Course Description:

This self-paced course has been created to provide the practitioner of Animal Assisted Play Therapy or other Animal Assisted Interventions with a solid background in canine behavior and training. It is likely to be useful to others who wish to learn more about canine socialization, behavior, and training, and how these relate to our relationships with dogs as well as to the work we ask them to do.
Included lessons are as follows: (1) the therapeutic partnership; (2) the nature of dogs; debunking the myths; (3) socialization; (4) overview of dog training; (5) learning principles (theory); (6) positive training concepts; (7) dog training applications; (8) more training applications and resources; (9) the dog’s welfare. The course consists of a PowerPoint presentation, links to supporting documents, the textbook (sold separately), video presentations and examples, and detailed examples of how to train a number of key behaviors.
Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for the live 4-day Animal Assisted Play Therapy Level 2 workshop offered regularly in the US and UK (see details of the live AAPT Level 2 workshop at, under Training. If you have already registered for the Level 2 training, you do not need to register for this course here. You will be sent the password needed to enter the course.)

This course consists of a self-paced PowerPoint presentation supplemented by videos and documents. The course is eligible for 10 continuing education credits/contact hours, distance learning for most mental health professionals. This course is included in the registration fees for the Level 2 Animal Assisted Play Therapy training program. It is also available for purchase as a stand-alone course. After you register, you will be sent a password and instructions for entering the course. The password is changed each quarter (January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1). Should you need to renew access to the course beyond the quarter in which you first register, simply contact Dr. Risë VanFleet at the end of the quarter to obtain the new password. One renewal is permitted per registration.
